Essendon Royals’ samba queens are back for more in 2020 with Marcella Marques and Priscilla Ribas both recommitting to the Royals for their upcoming State League 1 campaign.

The Brazilian duo arrived at the club after Round 3 in 2019 and both played a crucial role in the club’s extraordinary run of form that secured second place in last season’s State League 2 North-West division.

Aside from their obvious skill, Marques and Ribas bring a remarkable amount of experience to the club, having previously won the Women’s Premier League with South Melbourne in the past.

Marques said her experience with the club and the team last season meant she was only too happy to return in 2020.

"I can't wait to play another season at Royals with most of the girls that were here last season,” he said.

“I felt welcomed by the moment I arrived at this club by players and committee.

“Pre-season is already looking fantastic with great players and [senior women’s coach] Mick [Gallo] and [women’s technical director] Jess [Gallo] joining the club. I'm sure this will be a challenging but a big season for us!"

Of Marques, senior coach Gallo said her experience and quality on the ball would make a big difference to the side as it looks to establish itself in State League 1 and attempt to push for promotion.

“Marcela brings a huge amount of experience with multiple years of playing in the state's top leagues,” he said.

“She is a winner, but more importantly plays with joy and the South American love of the game.

“As a coach, I enjoy sitting back and watching the passion and creativity she brings onto the pitch, and am really looking forward to challenging Marcy to take her game even higher in 2020!

“Marcy is a true professional, and a player that will be a fantastic mentor to the younger girls in the squad.”

Ribas was similarly excited about extending her journey with the Royals.

“I’m looking forward to another year at Royals with a great group of girls and a club that supports women's soccer," she said.

Coach Gallo said Ribas would continue to be a key part of the team.

“Priscilla is another key signing for the club. Like Marcela, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help guide the younger players in their journey of senior football,” he said.

“Experience winning titles at the highest level of football in the state. Another hard-working player, that also brings the South American passion to the club, and a player that will challenge me as a coach to take her game to another level also.”
