Essendon Royals might not have been the most influential team in State League 1 North-West this season, but they could play a decisive role in the promotion race this Saturday.

The Royals will round out the 2019 season with the visit of second-placed North Sunshine Eagles, who come into the game knowing that a win will secure their promotion from State League 1.

The Eagles were handed a massive break when Brimbank Stallions pulled off a shock result against Sydenham Park SC last week and followed that up with a tight win against Caroline Springs George Cross on Sunday.

With just two points separating the second-placed Eagles from third-placed Sydenham, all eyes will be on Cross Keys Reserve to see if North Sunshine can get the job done.

The Royals will not be out to do anyone any favours, however, and will be looking to ensure a competitive game at Cross Keys.

Essendon has been hit by injuries in the last few weeks, but coach Vaughan Coveny was confident his team remained with a chance of pulling off an upset against their more fancied opponents.

“We’re expecting a big crowd because of the promotion race but we’re prepared for a tough battle,” Coveny said.

The match will be Coveny’s last as senior coach, as he steps down from senior duties to focus on his Head of Football role in 2020.

The club has already locked in its senior men’s coaching set-up for 2020, with Vitale Ferrante locked in for the new season, alongside assistant Carl Recchia and strength and conditioning coach Juan Toro.

We are seeking volunteers to assist us with the bar and BBQ on Saturday. If you are willing and able to help out, please contact the club via Facebook messenger.
