MATCH REPORT | Essendon Royals promotion hopes boosted with big win over La Trobe University
A massive second-half effort has seen the Essendon Royals take a massive step closer to promotion from the women’s State League 2 North-West division to State League 1.
The Royals produced seven goals in a brilliant second half to run out 7-0 winners against La Trobe University SC.
With the scores locked at 0-0 at half-time, Essendon needed to dig deep to break the deadlock and ensure the three points stayed at Cross Keys Reserve.
With promotion hopes hanging in the balance, Johno Clemente’s women did not disappoint.
Inspired by the brilliant Eiilan Nissan, the Royals found a new level in the second half.
Nissan scored three herself and assisted others to lead the Royals to a brilliant result.
Talia Jane chipped in with two goals of her own, while Stephanie Pantazopoulos and Lydia Schifferegger also got their names on the scoresheet to seal the win.
Coach Clemente was full of praise for his team.
“The girls really stepped up in that second half,” he said.
“Once again the team’s tactical flexibility really proved pivotal again.
“The girls ultimately recognised we could switch our shape to get more out of it and I agreed and it worked wonders.”
The win was made even better by the news that promotion rivals Hume City had dropped points in a 2-1 loss against Melbourne University SC.
That means the Royals now enjoy a clear three-point lead over Hume on the table with three games remaining.
The Promotion Run-In
With three games remaining, the promotion picture makes for favourable reading for the Royals.
