Essendon Royals are proud to announce that Vaughan Coveny will continue to operate as the club’s Head of Football for the 2020 season.

With the club’s Junior Boys National Premier Leagues (JBNPL) application accepted last week, Coveny’s re-appointment ensures the club will be able to continue to build on the groundwork completed over the last 12 months.

As Head of Football, Coveny will continue to oversee the football program, working closely with the club’s Technical Directors - who will be announced at a later date - to deliver an exceptional range of football programs to the club’s playing members.

Coveny brings vast experience to the role, both as a former professional and international footballer as well as a coach, having worked in developmental roles for Melbourne Victory and Caroline Springs George Cross.

The appointment sees Coveny continue in the role he was originally appointed at the club for in 2018.

Coveny said he was delighted to continue his work with the Royals and was looking forward to the added element of NPL football for the junior program.

“Next year we’ll see the addition of the NPL program to our offering which is very exciting,” Coveny said.

“One of the reasons I came here in the first place was to help the club put together a really good application for the NPL alongside the likes of Johno Clemente. We’ve done a lot of work so it was nice to see it come through.

“It’s good for the club and is good for our young players because it gives them another pathway to strive for to play at the highest level.

“But my role means I’ll also be overseeing the MiniRoos program, the community program - which remains important to us.

“The community side of the club is still very important for us because we want to ensure that there is still a place for those who just want to participate in the game.”

Essendon Royals president Richie Di Sauro was delighted to confirm the first appointment on the football side of things for the club in 2020 and was happy to see Coveny remain at the club for the foreseeable future.

“Vaughan has brought a wealth of football knowledge to the club since his arrival this year and I’m delighted we’ve secured him as Head of Football for 2020,” Mr Di Sauro said.

“His experience at the top level and his expertise in junior developmental coaching is a fantastic resource for the club and will continue to benefit all our junior teams and coaches.

“Now that we are able to offer an NPL program to our junior footballers, we expect the club’s junior program to take another step up in terms of professionalism, which will also benefit our community and women’s teams, and Vaughan is the perfect person to oversee that.”
