MATCH PREVIEW | Essendon Royals promotion march continues with visit of Yarra Jets
Just 270 minutes separate Essendon Royals from a triumphant return to Women’s State League 1 North-West.
This season has been a transformative one for the Royals senior women team under the watchful eye of coach Johno Clemente, but the team remains focused on the task at hand with another must-win clash this weekend.
The Royals take on the Yarra Jets and with his team still dealing with a number of injury complaints, even after the week off last week, Clemente is wary of a Jets team which will be looking to take a scalp against his wounded side.
“It’s gonna be a battle, we’re struggling with injuries and absentees,” Clemente said.
“Yarra Jets is a team battling near the bottom and at this time of the season those teams can be more dangerous than the teams at the top, so we need to be wary of them.”
Essendon sits in second place in the Women’s State League 2 North-West division and three points ahead of nearest promotion rival Hume City in third.
The Royals far superior goal difference, +38 compared to Hume’s +19, provides an additional buffer which could prove crucial with just three games remaining.
Hume take on fourth-placed St Albans Saints on Friday night in a match that could further define the Royals’ promotion chances.
Regardless of what happens elsewhere, Essendon knows its promotion fate rests in its hands and another three points against Yarra Jets this week will take the Royals much closer to promotion.
The Royals take Yarra Jets on this Sunday at Cross Keys Reserve. Kick-off is at 3.15 pm.
