MATCH PREVIEW | Essendon Royals women keen to bounce back against Melbourne University
The Essendon Royals senior women face a truly season-defining match this weekend when they take on Melbourne University SC at Princess Park.
The Royals saw their nine-game undefeated streak come to an end against FC Clifton Hill last week, but coach Johno Clemente said the response in training has been awe-inspiring as the women look to get straight back to winning ways this week.
“It’s been a big response from the girls, we know what we need to do to get that win back and the things we need to fix and we’re all on the same page,” he said.
“There’s no sugar-coating it, the next game will define these girls resilience and potentially the season.”
“This Melb Uni team is strong and they’re only two points behind us, and they have had some good results.
“They held us 0-0 last time, we were pretty unlucky but we’ll need luck and everything we have to get a result against them.”
Despite last week’s loss, the Royals remain in promotion contention, sitting just two points off second-placed Hume City and while Clemente knows he must now hope for a Hume slip-up along the way, he is pleased with how the girls have approached training following last weekend.
“It’s the business end of the season, and the reality is we are hoping Hume slip up, and we will hopefully be there if they do,” Clemente said.
“They’ve got Clifton Hill and Spring Hills in the next two weeks, there two tricky games for them so the pressure is on Hume to win these games to maintain there spot.”
Should an opening occur for the Royals, Clemente is sure his girls will do everything in their power to make sure they can take advantage.
“The girls are keen to get back on the field and remind everyone why they went nine games undefeated, the ‘bubble’ hasn’t burst and they're excited to show everyone that.”
