Something a bit different for Kids’ Corner this week.

There has been no rest for our Under-9 Girls White team these school holidays, with the team being put through their paces by none other than Melbourne Victory W-League defender Alexandra Gummer.

Gummer, who has been a member of Victory’s last two W-League squads, was met with incredible enthusiasm and excitement by the girls who could not wait to learn from Gummer, who obliged with a fantastic session for the youngsters.

Our under-9 Girls White team have had no problem finding the back of the net this season, scoring 59 goals over the course of the year, but Gummer’s session on Tuesday provided the girls a chance to learn some great defensive concepts and skills.

Coach Paul Ciavarella was full of praise for Gummer.

“These girls have been popping in goals like lollipops. We have scored a total of 59 and conceded 4, so it was nice from a coaching perspective to see the girls work on their defending with a strong defender from Melbourne Victory,” he said.

Gummer works with one of the parents on the team who told her about the girls and she was more than happy to come down for a night of training on Tuesday.

“I came down once last year and I’ve come down again this year. I love giving back to the game and seeing the game grow,” she said.

“Seeing the smiling faces on the girls and hopefully inspiring them to keep playing the game is something that is pretty awesome.”
