The Essendon Royals continue to climb the Women’s State League 2 North-West ladder following their impressive 2-0 win over La Trobe University SC on Sunday.

The girls made it three wins on the trot and became the first team to keep a clean sheet against La Trobe this season in another outstanding performance.

Marcela Marques and Stephanie Pantazapoulos scored the goals, taking the Royals goal tally over the last three games to 12, with just the one conceded in that time.

The Royals are now undefeated over the last five weeks.

The game was played in tough conditions with a strong wind blowing throughout the game.

Marques opened the scoring after the Royals missed a host of chances, before Pantazapoulos doubled the lead later in the game.

Defending against a fierce wind in the second half, the Royals defence had to defend a host of long balls to keep La Trobe from scoring and secure the three points.

The conditions made for a somewhat scrappy affair, but the Royals quality eventually shone through.

Coach Johnno Clemente said he was happy to see the team pick up another three points, he believes there remains room for significant improvement in terms of performance.

“We’re all not happy with the performance as we know we can play better and that’s the sign of the maturity of the group,” Clemente said.

“We’re not happy just to win, we want to assert our dominance and play in our style for 90 minutes, and that champion mentality I saw after the game was the highlight of the day for me.”

The win moves the Royals up to third on the ladder ahead of next week’s home game against the Yarra Jets FC.
